Anti-Semitism: The Ugly Side of Facebook

A Congressional briefing last week entitled “Hate in the Information Age” highlighted the fact that we’re experiencing a sharp increase in hate and terror propaganda on the Internet. To make matters worse, new interactive web 2.0 services allow extremists to leverage technologies such as blogs and video sharing to promote their agenda on popular sites such as Facebook, MySpace and YouTube.

At their core, social networking sites provide a simple mechanism for connecting with friends and like minded people across the Internet. Anti-Semitic propagandists and terror supporters however use these sites as a dynamic tool for spreading their propaganda against Jews and Israel. What should be particular cause for concern is that they are targeting the teens and young adults that form the majority of members at social networking sites such as Facebook.

Rabbi Abraham Cooper, an associate dean at the Simon Wiesenthal Center, presented the results of their Digital Terrorism and Hate Project’s annual study to the Congressional Hearing. He reported that they had observed a 30% increase in the presence of hate groups online in the last year. Most of it can be attributed to posts in blogs and discussion forums. “The Internet is a fantastic marketing tool,” Rabbi Cooper noted.

Unlike more traditional web sites, group pages on social networking sites can be harder to find and track. “You can market and train followers while bypassing traditional Web sites. It makes it very, very difficult for law enforcement to follow what’s going on,” he said. According the Wiesenthal Center report, “Extremists are leveraging 2.0 technologies to dynamically target young people through digital games, Second Life scenarios, blogs, and even Youtube and Facebook style videos depicting racist violence and terrorism.”

I discussed the various Holocaust Denial sites on Facebook in my last blog post. It does however seem that the more you dig, the uglier it gets.

How bad is it? A quick look at the page of one group called “We hate Israel” gives you an idea of what can still pass uncensored on Facebook. The main page contains the image of a large swastika made from the letters in the word Israel. There’s a poster of the Twin Towers on fire with a large caption stating “The Jews. We all know it was them.” The group blog is littered with posts such as “Kill all Israel people!!!”, “Death to Israel!” and “Hitler took the (right) decision with the Jewish people. They must all be burned at the same time”. Other posts threaten that there will be a strike in October that will wipe out all of Israel. Companies such as Disney and Pepsi are accused of being Zionist (it’s claimed that Pepsi derived its name as an acronym from “Pay Every Penny to Save Israel”!). Yes, even Facebook - the company that is allowing the group to spread this vicious anti-Semitic dribble - is supposedly “owned by a Zionist”!

I should clarify that sites such as Facebook state expressly that they do not allow objectionable groups, comments or images to appear on their web pages. They will actively search for and censor any pornographic or violent images. Their terms of service clearly state “You will not post content that is hateful, threatening, pornographic, or that contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence.” In addition, “You will not use Facebook to do anything unlawful, misleading, malicious, or discriminatory.” Inexplicably however, it seems that extremists espousing hatred or threatening violence towards Jews and Israel fall under their radar.

To be fair, Facebook - albeit under significant pressure - has removed a number of Holocaust Denial sites recently. The most offensive includes a cartoon of Hitler in bed with Anne Frank, posted from Lebanon. Some of the extremist groups still using Facebook however include Stormfront, National Socialist Life, Libertarian National Social Movement, Aryan Guard, FARC, Al Shabab Mujahideen, Hamas (Multiple), Hezbollah (multiple), Faloja Forum, Support Taliban, Support Taliban and scores of anti-Israel sites.

The Jewish Internet Defense Force (JIDF) has been leading the fight against these issues on Facebook.  They have recently launched a campaign against all the “HATE ISRAEL” groups and just yesterday launched one against all the Holocaust denial material.  Their group (created yesterday) already has 5600+ members:

That said, you should have spoken to the JIDF about these issues.  Did you read or see the actual SWC report?  It’s a joke.  They did good work in the past but it contains no in depth research whatsoever, yet they get the publicity as if they are doing something on this front.  They aren’t doing much at all.

Comment by John on 5/16/09 at 12:21 am

The issue is anti-semitism online. It’s much larger and more important than whether the JIDF or SWC is doing a better job or getting more publicity. I’m very familiar with the JIDF and they also do admirable work. I don’t think you’re doing them justice by aiming your comments at the Wiesenthal Center. It would be a terrible shame to reduce this very real problem to a petty squabble between Jewish organizations.

Comment by Sam Gliksman on 5/16/09 at 11:06 am

Mankind is ... one and only group of people, composed by people who believe they’re sons of God and people who doesn’t.
Why do they kill each other?
They simpling do leave anger overtakes stupidity.
Anything can be discussed around a table.
There is no need of killing to solve our problems, well the exactly oppositte… We need to be alive in order to live this life we’ve gained.
Once ignorance gets fullfilled of wisdom, I hope those words of revenges will end.

Comment by Marcos A. Rondineli on 5/16/09 at 4:26 pm

I agree with Sam, it is a much bigger issue than antisemitism on Facebook, its all over the social networks.  Look at Youtube.  I run a page their for my organization and we work closely with the Jewish Agency, the comments we get on a daily basis are appalling…

Comment by Christina on 5/20/09 at 10:34 am

This is sad :(  I am not from Israel but am promoting the place for its tourist attractions which I believe are all worth it.  Social media when not use appropriately can bring more damage rather than information.  I hope a law against this kind of posts will be implemented.

My organization has also been putting up a fight against Antisemitism and Anti-Israel pages on Facebook as well as the reporting and removal of people who create antisemitic events when they use fake accounts, these people are known as Trolls…

So far it has been a very successful campaign and accounts are removed daily…

I believe history can never be denied.
I believe better people are those who keep and apply tradional values to their own civilized societies.
An Indian tribe is not less civilized just because it uses little or no clothing.
Its value lies in the humanity of their beings and that is characterized by faith that his people, instead of asking, fears.
And because it fears the unknown.
There is no reason for us to feel about God anything but love.
Hatreds, fears, uncertainties, fears and anxieties are for those who know the value of life.
Shall we teach love, we’ll get love learnt.
Shall we teach nothing we learn nothing more than doubts.
Shall we teach doubts ... here we have back terrorism.

Comment by Marcos A. Rondineli on 8/09/10 at 4:24 pm

And, as Aniie said before me, I don’t think there is any anti-semitism in the world I live in.
I consider myself jewish, and I have nothing against this wise people. I’m not, as far as I know, jewish on the motherhood line, but indeed my grandfather inhereted some of their genetical characteristics.
I do not consider showing images of terrorist, perfectly taken, as an anti-terrorist call, but as ... a beautifull favour to humanity appealling to their attention to the danger of spreading distinct faith among ourselves.
Israel bombs Palestine.
Not jewishes.
Thanks Aniie for that part of your sayings, but I disagree with you that this place is doing other than appealing to our conscience that the Evil is already done.
September 11 is part of the history and showd not be forgoten.
The best way of doing it… is showing it and talking about it, but… do not forget… Al Qaeda is not a jewish corporation.
And please, read ‘traditional’ back there where I wrote wrong the word.
Death, killings and war are traditionally transfered among our generations.
Pictures, and words have not yet eficiently exchanged them.
People who claim love their God shall understand that God provided too their brothers and neighbors.

Comment by Marcos A. Rondineli on 8/09/10 at 4:41 pm

Marcos, as long as jews exist, anti-semitism will exist.
Just watch for this anti-Zionist folks that say that Israel did 9/11 and jews are responsible for all problems.

Comment by Danielle on 9/26/10 at 1:46 pm

Well, I agree with Danielle, but we must never forget that once there are people believing in God, there will be preaching non-existence of divinity.
It is not the popular opinnion what determines the existence of the people.
They do exist, by themselves, and those defending life for all are indeed better than those defending death of some.
No doubt.
Anti-semitism exists, as well as anti-muslim or anti-Jesus. As well as anti-God, those who pray for Satan.
And, fortunatelly, those who instead of prayngs, just thanks ... or not.
We’ll free. And diferent.
The 9/11 events were orchestrated (played and conducted) by people who died.
Let’s not forget there either.
And, as far as I’m concern, Obama could well be Osama.
It does not bring the dead back to us, but, as I personally believe, took their souls already straight to God.
Let’s… forgive the bad actions and share more fraternally our world.
Yes, people lie and have wrong concepts.
We need to teach them the right and good values.
How we do that?
Telling them the Truth.
Who ... by the way ... knows it for sure?

Comment by Marcos A. Rondineli on 9/26/10 at 2:52 pm

Marcos, since you are not Jewish, then your chance of encountering anti-semitism is less than of that of a jew. Eveyone hates eveyone in this world, though since Jews are the smallest percentage of people, they are succeptible to it the most and yes they are considered a nation, but right everyone is trying to legitimate their tiny state.

Comment by danielle on 10/02/10 at 9:45 am

@danielle
Not necessarily true, gentiles have just as much, if not more of a chance at encountering anti-semetic sentiments in their neighbourhood. Especially considering that there are many non-Jews, and indeed ‘non-religious’ people out there who all share differing beliefsets and world-views, and who, by virtue of this, also happen to consolidate together in societies, and interact with one another on a daily basis. I myself am of the ‘goyim’, and I have many friends who are non-Jewish also, but who may follow Christianity, or believe in Pantheism, Zen-Buddhism, or even String Theory, let alone those who are Atheists or Agnostic. My point is, many of these people ARE anti-semetic to some degree themselves, or at least anti-Zionist (and the ones that aren’t are either Jews themselves or are able to jokingly lampoon Jews, harmlessly in jest). Most of these people know one another, and are also friends/acquaintances with Jews. So there is a greater likelihood that non-jewish people will encounter anti-semetic racial slurs every day than what Jew’s would encounter, because the sad fact is, anti-semetism is part of the norm for a majority of average irreligious people, particularly in Western Society today, and even people of other faiths such as Christians. Also it is much more prolific amongst non-Jews, because there are many anti-smeites who don’t take it upon themselves to openly express their views to the public and indeed Jews themselves, and they find it suffices to merely express these sentiments amongst close peers, some of whom would share the same views.

I know Anti-semetism is as old as time itself (blood libel), but to me it still seems a relatively new trend. Almost virginal, either as if its been reprised in the past 100 years (Neo-antisemetism?) or like the novelty never wore off to begin with, to either Jew or Anti-Semite - and to the point that both subjects today feed off one another in some sort of symbiosis of hate. Its as if some hidden force has been keeping it alive and breathing life into it for centuries. But with that said, I’m guessing if the Jews encountered anti-semetism as much as you’d all like to say (more than gentiles), then Jews as a collective entity would probably have gotten over it all by now. Maybe all that needs to happen is Jew’s need to accept that people will always believe in a legion of differing philosophies and are by nature biased, afraid and prone to many racial slants; as is the byproduct of propaganda, patriotism, and the almost simultaneous deterioration of EVERYONE’S societal climate, their mores and the opposing credos we all adopt. Everyone is entitled to have their own opinions, even if it doesn’t necessarily chime in with your beliefs, I’m sure the Human within you, regardless of you faith, will know this inherently and agree.

Racism to me is not a huge deal unless violence is involved, and those cases, although abhorrent, are rare and hardly ever constitute such deviancy amplification spirals, such as that which you see in the news; this only serves to exacerbate matters further; pours salt on the wound if you will. Perhaps if Jew’s assimilated themselves further into society then the majority of idiots out there wouldn’t have such a problem and therefore you wouldn’t either. The very fact that you label a person the much-loved ‘shibboleth’ Anti-Semite, this immediately separates you from the common man and further leaves you open to attack. Do you honestly think the average ‘anti-semite’ is educated enough to even grasp what the word ‘Semite’ denotes, the history of the word or the principals to which you attribute yourselves as Jews? The only other common mainstay amongst most racist people is imbecilic idiocy.. So why oh why, with your eclectic accumulation of knowledge and love of wisdoms and high-concepts, do Jews give such a shit about what the bigots and fools have to say, when most anti-semetic remarks today are unfounded echoes of ancient propaganda?

Also and to digress, no one really ever mentions antisemitism in reference to anti-muslim slants, held by a GREAT majority at present. Forgive me if i’m wrong but aren’t Palestinians technically semites as well? What gives Jew’s the right to dominate the Semetic arena in this sense (possibly for all the wrong reasons)? How do Jews happen to just own this ‘label’, and call anyone out on “anti-semetism” subsequently, expecting some sort of special treatment? Does it make it easier to be pigeonholed by racists, so that you guys have your own term which can be employed to foment anti-gentile attitudes within your own faith? It just seems like a lot of Jews out there WANT to be attacked, just so they can complain about it. Anyway, you’re not the only ones who must endure ‘anti-you’ sentiments, we all have our vices, and must deal with backlash from people no matter what it may be over. I had to endure years of bullying and beatings at school just for listening to Jazz music and liking science..

People should probably wake up to the fact that this is all down to attitude, if Jew’s simply cared less about what people were saying about them, like most of the rest of us do, then there really wouldn’t be a problem. If violence is involved, then I’d say Jews have every right to descend into complete pandemonium if they wish, but to digress: it shouldn’t be called a “hate crime”! This is trifling, because to act on violence is to adhere to some sort of sentiment of hate to begin with, so ‘hate crime’ kind of goes without saying. Racism is racism, I doubt it will ever be quelled or quashed any time soon, unfortunately its here to stay and the world has been architected that way - if it wasn’t for racism for instance, certain undesirable people in power would not be making the pretty penny they have so far on account of the global race war all around us. It’s an age-old evil which has followed us from the shades of our past and has now forged for us a future fraught by hatred, paranoia and uncertainty. While we’re still hung up over the trivialities of race or gender, these undesirables have nothing standing in their way, and bad people will go on to profit from the cowardice and vanity of others.

So the best we can do, those of us who aren’t racist that is, is if we all really want to move forward together, then forget about what a certain percentage of people are saying from either ‘camp’, forget religion and history for a minute, quit laying wounded like self-afflicted victims, and work together as trustful peers for a better future. If racism stopped getting so much press, and if people just shrugged it off as wasted breath, hollow snide words not worth retaliating over, and above all counterproductive (about 80% of all Racism really is anyway) then perhaps we could all move forward out of the racial miasma, dispel our woes and build a brighter future for the world at large..

Comment by Theofan on 2/27/11 at 6:12 pm

Apologies for my last few lines. I got lost in my own words. Parenthesis was supposed to be placed:
... if people just shrugged it off as wasted breath, snide hollow words not worth retaliating over (about 80% of all Racism really is anyway) and as above all else counterproductive, then perhaps we could all move forward…

I was in no way stating that racism is only 80% counterproductive
Racism is 110% counterproductive..
Racism needs to be met when and where its due, but not as frequently as the focus it brings these days. In my opinion, its a waste of energy, and only makes things worse.

“Be the bigger man, and walk away”

Thanks

Danielle, I make yours my word.
It is true, I’m not gay, but I had the chance of being accused of such. And people called me Jewish too.
But, anyway, you’re right.
The anti-semitism exists and this is the point.
Do the semits deserve a land to live?
Not everyone hates eveyone in this world, and I shall take for myself: I love those I love and they’re not only many, they’re all I have met and heard about.
I love humans, not individuals.
We are talking about nations, and they all deserve their home to live, not only to defend.
They shouldn’t be atacked, by the way, nor attack, anybody.
Peace is the goal.

Those who claim the land from the promise?
Well… whoever heard the promise, heard about childhood and inheritance too.
Jewish people claim their land.
Other people ... do need land to live.
One day this compromise will be fullfilled.
At that day… we won’t need weapons.
Love will be the rule, the culture, the comprehension, the wisdom.

Israel has to do what they need to do to protect their land.  I would do the same thing if my house was surrounded by groups of people that wanted to take away my land.  So you really can’t put major blame on Israel.  They have enemies on all sides of them…

Comment by Phil on 4/11/11 at 5:04 pm

LOL@ Phil.. “Their” land? Really??

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1948_Palestinian_exodus

And the Palestinians don’t have enemies besieging at all sides either?

Ok, so explain the IDF’s “pirate” raid on the Gaza aid convoy back in may of this year? Nine people killed in cold blood by a ruthless military force who rappelled down onto a humanitarian ship in international waters, murdered, bashed, confiscated cameras, and all for what? Because Israel are that stubborn that they won’t even allow help for those of their countrymen in need. This flotilla was 100% CIVILIAN, they were activists sending humanitarian aid to CIVILIANS in Gaza, men, women and children; 80% of which rely on humanitarian aid to get by, and 45% of which are unemployed. The blockade see’s to it that these people are silenced and suffer in squalor, without so much as a right to receive imported materials for use in the rebuilding of their ravaged homes. And somehow Israel are the sainted ones in all of this? Do me a favor, go and seek out the countless U.S. vetoes of UN resolutions critical of Israel, then research the unbridled influence which the AIPAC lobby has over American politics, then go spank yourself for having being played a fool by the Jewish-owned media all this time, and then come back here and tell me that this is a level playing field…

Remember, you aren’t a racist, an antisemite, or a muslim apologist for holding murderous warmongering scum in contempt, no matter their race.
In fact, it would be a creditable measure of your own sanity if you did.
Anyone who says otherwise is either simply ignorant or bloodthirsty, and will use any means necessary to justify War, and by extension, inequality.

Comment by LOL on 11/28/11 at 9:06 am

The use of the term Anti-Semitism is a case cultural imperialism.

The term ‘antisemtism’ was allegedly coined by Wilhelm Marr in the 1880’s in a supposed written diatribe AGAINST Jewish people.  Since then Jews have used this definition for their own purposes.

A Semite is someone who speaks a Semitic language from the region of N.Africa, Arabia and western Asia. Semites have also been defined as the descendents of the tribe of Shem from the bible. Shem is descended from Abraham who had favor with ‘God’.

Using the term antisemitism to mean only Jews serves the purpose of making people think Jews are the only ‘descendents of God’.

Most people make the mistake of calling Arabs antisemites even though Arabs are Semites. And again, if the only time the word Semite is heard is when we are talking about Jews then it reinforces the idea of Jews being the only Semites.

I do not know a single Semite who accepts this definition. Non-Zionist Jews do not accept this definition.

Finally, if antisemitism means Jews only then what you call someone is hates Semites?

Comment by Carl on 12/22/11 at 9:20 am

AN interesting article, but more interesting even is the comments section, which proves the authors point. The comments begin in an open and honest way and then gradually devolve in nonsense and anti-Semitic tirades - exactly what the author has pointed out.
