Why does “repentance” sound threatening, but “atonement” relatively benign? It may be that as Jews we’re not super comfortable with either word, not used to regular acts of contrition either. Or maybe it’s the impending fear of not being re-inscribed in the book of life that keeps us turning over, sweating in our sleep.
