Spinka Rebbe gets 2 years for tax fraud

Rabbi Naftali Tzvi Weisz, the Brooklyn-based Grand Rebbe of the Spinka sect, was sentenced to two years in federal prison Monday for a decade-long fraud and money-laundering scheme.

Weisz, 61, had pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy before U.S. District Judge John F. Walter in Los Angeles last August.

Weisz and six associates in Los Angeles, Brooklyn and Israel admitted to participating in a fraudulent kickback scheme in which donors to Spinka charities were refunded up to 95 percent of their donations, while claiming the full amounts as deductions on their income tax.

In 2006, Spinka charities received nearly $8.5 million in donations and made $744,596 in “profits,” after deducting amounts paid back to contributors.

Last year, Moshe Zigelman, the rebbe’s gabbai or assistant, pleaded guilty and also received a two-year prison term.
Spinka is an ultra-Orthodox sect that originated in 19th century Romania and has adherents in Israel, Europe and Brooklyn.

Walter could have sentenced Weisz up to five years in prison, but chose the shorter sentence after concluding that the rabbi did not participate in the scheme to enrich himself personally.

“I am convinced that he never took a penny for himself,” Walter said.

In turn, Weisz told the judge, “I am embarrassed beyond words. My remorse is deep and heartfelt.”

A donor to Spinka charities, who pleaded guilty to using the illegal tax write-off, was sentenced to six months in prison earlier this year. Prosecutors are currently investigating more than 100 other contributors and warned that if they did not come forward voluntarily they might face “significantly higher” sentences.

In a speech last summer in Boro Park, Weisz told thousands of listeners, “We have learned the hard way,” and he urged everyone to follow the law, yeshivaworld.com reported.

The truly sad part about this article is that it simply adds fuel to the ever burning fire of anti-semitism. Jews reputations as tricky and manipulative- especially with money- are strengthened and reinforced by scandals and stories like this. I wonder when prominent Jews (politicians, rebbes, etc.) will realize that the new surge in anti semitism is not due to sheer hate as it was 80 years ago but rather is the result of scandal after scandal and wrongdoing after wrongdoing on the part of Jewish leaders being exposed. A change must be made and it has to start from the top.

Jews stealing and committing crimes? Noooo….they wouldn’t dare set up a charity specifically for the purpose of defrauding taxpayers in the U.S.? Oh wait that’s what they did according to the article. Maybe the the should have used the “secret tax magic” defense which says that anyone of Jewish descent has magical powers that allow them to avoid having to pay taxes! Oh oh they could have used the Nazis as an excuse!

Let us, as gullible Christians and westerners, who have been taught to hate all Arabs (the true Semites and the real Children of Shem) release a flood of tears so great for those much-abused hook-nosed destroyers of orange groves and the builders of a hideous wall of evil between themselves and real, suffering humanity, drown them all in a deluge of our overwhelming sympathy for their sheer Christ-murdering cunning and arts of manipulation, blackmail and bribery.

Let us, as Christians and westerners, never forget their hatred towards us and forgive them for their apparently harmless wisecracks; for surely, these lovable Edomites and Turko-Mongols, who were never the Children of Israel, must be joking when they say:

Just out of curiosity, I googled

and got eight hits not including this one. Leaving off the mihail I got four primaries, and thirty dupes.

So, are irrational rants accepted in the comment sections of the Jewish Journal?  This is my first visit to the site and I’m surprised that Mihail’s ‘contribution’ is not deleted, the offensive waste of space that it is.  Or does the JJ have a Show-Compassion-For-Idiots policy?  Such stuff wastes space, and nobody reads it anyway.  I will check a few more comment sections here and if they’re all like this one - a moron box - then bye, bye JJ.

It’s ok, Fasz. You have to understand that everyone is welcome at the Jewish Journal - lunatics, dingbats, haters, Holocaust deniers, everyone. The only ones who are blocked from posting are Orthodox Jews who are not closeted non-Orthodox Jews.

I have been found guilty of tax fraud against the Business that I own . I have had one conviction for assault in the past , will i end up in a federal or a state prison , and am i looking at a long sentence

Is there a way to report tax fraud to the irs without someone finding out it was me? A friend of mine recently married an illegal alien who worked under someone else’s social security number but did no claim the income earned on taxes and ended up getting a huge refund- which they were not entitled to.
