Bibi Should Have Gone to Washington

Posted by David Suissa

It’s indicative of Israel’s PR acumen—or lack thereof—that when a crisis strikes, the reflex of the leadership is to head for the bunker. The Flotilla fiasco will go down as one of Israel’s biggest PR disasters. This was no Israeli commando raid in response to years of terrorist attacks or rockets raining on civilians. This was a raid to protect a blockade that has very little international support, and against a boat that was dressed up as a humanitarian mission. Yes, of course, it was an ambush. The “protestors” were more like terrorist thugs than they were rowdy protestors looking for a photo op.

Unfortunately and tragically, however, in the mayhem that followed the raid, Israeli commandoes killed at least 10 of these violent protestors. Now ask yourself: If the world comes down so hard on Israel when it defends itself against years of rocket attacks from genocidal terrorists, how will they react to these killings against a “humanitarian mission” that has worldwide support?
That’s why Prime Minister Netanyahu should have kept his appointment tomorrow with President Obama, instead of returning to Israel to “deal with the crisis.” Didn’t anyone tell him that the immediate crisis he has to deal with right now is outside of Israel?

The condemnations from around the world are coming at a furious pace, and it will get a lot worse in the coming days. The Flotilla Fiasco will make Goldstone look like a picnic.
The meeting with Obama was a perfect opportunity for Bibi to try to stem the tide of condemnations by providing some much-needed context.

One thing is clear: If you believe you have a case to make to influence the court of public opinion, there is no better place to do it than at the White House with the U.S. president by your side.

With the cameras of the world on him, Bibi could have said something like:

“We deeply regret the tragic deaths and injuries that occurred yesterday on the Gaza seas. Our condolences go out to all the families that were touched by this tragedy. We already have some evidence that this was a deliberate provocation by a group with terrorist connections. But I’m here to say that upon my return to Israel, I will immediately convene an independent commission of inquiry to gather all the facts and investigate how this tragedy happened so that we can prevent its re-occurrence.

“I’m also here to say that Israel does not want this blockade. It is a last resort. Our deepest wish is to live in peace with our neighbors. This blockade was forced on us by neighbors whose deepest wish is not to live in peace with us, but to destroy us. The goal of the blockade is not to hurt Palestinian civilians but to prevent the transfer of material and military equipment that is aimed solely at killing innocent Israeli civilians. We have allowed humanitarian aid to flow to Gaza during the blockade and will continue to do so.

“I ask the Palestinian leaders of Gaza today: Give us a statement of peace, give us some evidence that you are ready to live in peace as good neighbors, that you are ready to engage with us in good faith, and I will end the blockade immediately.”

It won’t make a tinkers you know what whether Bibi goes or doesn’t go to meet with Obama, the world has already made up it’s mind. In fact, the PR was evident before the raid, with Hamas claiming victory either way. If I were P.M, I would have allowed the boat to reach Gaza, so what? But that said, Israel has every right to boycott an enemy, whether through an embargo or stopping
a bunch of thugs. Both sides assumed there would have been some casualties, but Israel was woefully incorrectly unprepared. That is the real pity of all of this. Look, Iran sent police and militants to stop millions protesting an illegal election..(all on Y Tube), and what has been the consequences? Iran came up with nonsensical excuses, believed by most countries, caus they want to believe it. Iran has cloud and oil, the protestors have women and babies. It’s all about power. Israel has lost it’s power since 1967,as evidenced by the outrage. On one believes it anymore, including some US liberal Jews. This is a pin prick in Israel’s overall problems, paled in comparison by Iran’s pending nuclear capability. Now that is an area where mistakes should not and cannot be made. When a pro-Palestinian at a California university campus can tell students not to talk to Jewish students, and get away with it, you know how little clout we still have. Would the same be said about blacks or Hispanics?

David,

I respectfully disagree.

By using words like “regret,” “condolences,” and “tragedy” (mentioned in the first paragraph of your sample Bibi statement) Israel is indirectly sending the message that it shares blame in the incident, thus, positioning itself as being on the defensive. So far, the facts vastly support Israel’s version of the incident.

What Israel needs to do is to continue, as it has been, to repeatedly state that (1) the protestors had ample warning, (2) the military acted in self-defense, (3) the protestors had clear directions for how to transfer the aid, and (4) that 5/6 boats peacefully obeyed orders and, therefore, were dealt with peacefully.

By going on the offensive and acting with conviction, at least some uncorrupted gatekeepers will successfully be reached. At the end of the day, 3-5 key messages of the right facts distributed consistently through the appropriate media channels will do more to help Israel than meeting with Obama as this situation is just unfolding. The Israeli people need Netanyahu in Israel more than they need him to meet Obama at this point in time.

Natanyahu knew that if he did not return to Jerusalem, it would be an opportunity for the other six ministers who were involved in the decision to, in his absence, place all the blame on their intrepid leader. The name of the game in Israeli politics is to avoid blame for your failures and jump to claim the credit in the off-chance, (lately less than one in ten), that something goes as planned.

your US centric myopia knows no bounds. Clearly something went wrong in intelligence, strategic planning, and military operations to allow a fiasco in which the soldiers were placed in a life threatening situation and a pr disaster occurred. The actual people Bibi was elected to serve want answers. The statement you “wrote” was already given by Bibi in Ottawa and as noted had limited impact. In the midst of a multi faceted crisis to remain in the US for a 5 min meeting with obama(who is kind of busy with his own crisis if you havent noticied) and some soundbites for cable news would be an insult to the israeli people. And btw whatever backchannel negotiations going on now with turkey are far more impt than soubbites on cnn or fox

ISRAEL has to be the MORE AGGRESSIVE in it’s PR DEPT….we need to raise $ for ACTIVISTS the RAID UC Irvine, Turkish Embassy, Iranian Embassy & ALL the SCUMBALL “fashtunkenda” Arab/Islamic countires & organizations that keep on BLAMING US…..we need “STRONG JEWS” like Irv Rubin who was always there for Jews & Israel. The census is that the public HATE or KNOW the “FOLLOWERS OF ISLAM” are a dangerous group as the FEED THEIR HOTRNY MEN ON &@ VIRGINS…....NOW what CRAP is that…............it’s like the USA idiot’s in the 60’s and their slogan…...SEX, DRUGS & ROCK ‘n Roll”............they smoke their Hash….....SO as we KNOW the Arabs are NOT a SMART NATION and because they BREED LIKE RATS and live in POVERTY they have NO REAL LEADERS ready to STAND UP and say….MOHAMMED NEVER TAUGHT THIS CRAP TO YOU…...BUT as we KNOW anyone doing that WOULD BE SLAUGHTERED…..the ONLY solution I see is that EVENTUALLY EVERYONE WILL GET SOOOOOOO MAD WITH THEM AND THEIR BS AND MADNESS, THAT THERE WILL HAVE TO BE A MASSIVE WORLD WAR 3 THAT WILL NUKE MECCA, IRAN, SYRIA AND some other places and HAMAS & PA extremists….SO
G-D will show us…BUT unfortunately we will suffer
economially and socially until the LIBERAL SCUMBAGS of EUROPE & SCANDINAVIA see their ERRORS and CHANGE THEIR WAYS.  JUST LIKE the PM of AUSTRALIA who had the “balls” to tell the MUSLIMS “leave if you want to cause CRAP…........we are sick of U & your LIES and humanity…....live like DECENT people.  SO the answer is for ISRAEL TO HAVE BETTER PR AND BEFRIEND NATIONS THAT SEE THEIR LIES AND “ALWAYS STAY ON ISRAELS SIDE OR ELSE THEY WILL SUFFER IN THE FUTURE”
