SOCK AND SACK

Temple Emanuel celebrated its annual Mitzvah Day last month, with the Beverly Hills congregation coming together to perform benevolent activities focusing on those in need. One event, the Sock and Sack Day, was held at the Midnight Mission in downtown Los Angeles.

Temple Emanuel congregants, together with Rabbi Laura Geller, made lunches and gave away new white socks to nearly 600 homeless people, including children, who live on the streets of downtown. The Midnight Mission and its marvelous team publicized the event and brought the homeless into its facilities for the giveaway.

The captain of Sock and Sack Day was 15-year-old congregant Erik Krasney, who has been actively involved with the cause of the homeless in Los Angeles.

FULFILLING EVENING

The Fulfillment Fund honored Imagine's award-winning producer Brian Grazer at the annual "Stars Gala" at the Beverly Hilton last month. The evening was emceed by Chris Rock and included an auction, featuring surprise guest Sinbad auctioning items with board member Tom Sherak.

The event raised more than $2 million for the Fulfillment Fund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping economically disadvantaged students graduate from high school and go on to college.

STARS SHINE

More than 700 entertainment, business, sports and civic leaders joined with The Jewish Home for the Aging for the fifth Celebration of Life-Reflections dinner at the Hollywood-Highland Ballroom on Nov. 13.

The evening saw Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa receive the organization's first Unity Award in recognition of his efforts to bringing together the diverse people of Los Angeles. FOX Sports President Ed Goren, along with his brother, Allan, and sister, Lisa, honored parents Betty and the late Herb Goren with the Reflections Award.

"The Practice's" William Shatner introduced Howard Atkins, CFO of Wells Fargo, which took the Community Leadership Award for its longtime commitment. "I am very honored to accept this award on behalf of the 155,000 Wells Fargo team members who support The Jewish Home," Atkins said.

"Tonight Show" host Jay Leno delivered a winning stand-up set as the evening's headliner, but "Let's Make a Deal's" Monty Hall and "FOX NFL Sunday's" Terry Bradshaw stole the show, as the pair traded barbs during a spirited live auction for sports packages that fetched five-figure bids.

"You'll get a cellophane-wrapped sandwich, a doughnut and a cup of coffee," Hall of Famer Bradshaw joked as he highlighted the selling points of a FOX Sports crew NFL tag-along package. "We're there at 4:30 a.m., but you don't need to be there until 5:15 a.m."

Event co-chairs were Barbara Miller-Fox and Steven Bickel. Others in attendance included state Rep. Lloyd Levine (D-Van Nuys), City Councilman Dennis Zine and Joyce Eisenberg-Keefer and Mel Keefer. -- Adam Wills, Associate Editor

PASSIONATE TEENS

Valley NCSY (National Conference of Synagogue Youth) had its annual winter Shabbaton in Oxnard. With close to 100 high school teens from throughout the Valley and Los Angeles, the Shabbaton was fun, exciting and inspirational for all those in attendance.

Theme of the weekend was "Passion" in life and in Judaism. The theme was beautifully discussed and presented by the Shabbaton's guest lecturers who came all the way from Israel and remote Postville, Iowa.

As one freshman from Taft High School said, "The speakers were great, the Shabbaton was awesome and I had a great time. Most importantly, I have decided to keep Shabbos and learn more about my heritage."
