Remembering Debbie Friedman: Michele Breslauer

I am a Debbie Friedman Jew.  There is no one who has influenced me more in my Judaism than Debbie.  I can remember 30-plus years ago, in my Shabbat whites, with my arms slung over my friends’ shoulders, swaying back and forth to Debbie’s music for six summers at Camp Hess Kramer.  She created my memories with her music.  I was fortunate to be able to hear her sing in person as an adult, at Wexner, Limmud, and the Academy for Jewish Religion, and each and every time she performed she brought spirit, love and passion into the room.  Tonight there were multiple generations in my home listening and dancing to “Sing Unto God,” “Not by Might, Not by Power,” and “The Latke Song,” celebrating her life.  She leaves behind the legacy of music, prayer, song, poetry, and ruach to millions of Jews all over the world, and to one very sad but grateful person here in Los Angeles.  She will be sorely missed.
