Milken Students Win Green Competition

Five students with the Mitchell Academy of Science and Technology (MAST) at Milken Community High School took top honors in the Green Schools division of the Pete Conrad Spirit of Innovation competition, at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View on April 10.

The goal of the competition was to design a plan to reduce their school’s energy costs.

Milken’s Team Green MAST, which includes students David Moghavem, Kevin Rudolph, Rachel Weitzman, Ethan Wolens and Michael York, created a plan to use emerging wind and solar-energy technology as well as reduce harmful materials on campus by replacing student use of disposable plastic bottles.

Green MAST captain Moghavem credits the victory to the wind plan, which proposes using turbines along the 405 Freeway to capture the wind created by passing cars.

What differentiated Green MAST’s proposal even further, he said, was their detailed budget.

“Other teams didn’t have as detailed budgets,” he said. “For example, with the wind plan we specified that we’d use a data logger company to find out how much energy will be produced from the wind speed, and for our sun plan we included quotes from different solar panel companies.”

Moghavem said Milken currently uses about 125,000 kilowatt hours per month, but with the Green MAST wind plan and sun plan (installing solar panels on Milken’s 20,000 square feet of roof space), the team predicts the school could save 20 to 22 percent on energy costs.
