Let Freedom Ring

July 4, which is this Monday, means barbecues, parades, beaches and fireworks. And why do we do all this? Because the United States of America was "born" on this date in 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was signed. The 13 colonies became an independent country, and we were no longer a part of the British Empire.

Do you ever feel like signing a declaration of independence from your parents? Well, you might want to talk to them about what you think you can do by yourself -- like walking to school or paying for a treat at the store. See what they say. They will probably agree if you are a responsible young person.

A Patriotic Pinwheel!

What you need:

\n

• 2 pieces of square paper

(the thicker the better)

\n

• Scissors

\n

• A hole punch

\n

• A push-pin

\n

• A pencil with an eraser

\n

• Markers or crayons

1. Fold the squares in half. Unfold the paper.

2. Decorate one side of each sheet of paper.

3. Put the undecorated sides of the paper together.

4. Make four cuts along the fold lines - about halfway to the center.

5. Punch four holes in the pinwheel, one at each corner.

6. Gently gather each of the four points (with a hole) to the center. (Be careful not to crease the paper.)

7. Push a push-pin through the four punched holes through the center of the pinwheel to attach the pinwheel to the side of a pencil's eraser.

Letter Switcheroo

I bet you're gonna have a lot of fun in the sun on July 4:

Can you get from FUN to SUN by changing just one letter at a time?
