Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles (JFS) is holding an inaugural Back to School Community Day, a supply drive for 3,000 children living below the poverty line, at Westfield Century City on Aug. 14.

JFS plans to give away backpacks filled with pens, paper, binders and other school necessities during the event, part of the Tools for School initiative, which is co-sponsored by Westfield and Coral Tree Café. The event is open only to prescreened families, and the giveaway will continue over several weeks.

“It may seem like a small thing to do to make sure that a student has a backpack with paper and pens, but those are the building blocks for success throughout the school year,” said Nancy Volpert, director of public policy at JFS.

The students who will be receiving the backpacks and supplies — elementary, middle and high school students in LAUSD schools — are from families already receiving assistance from JFS.

The Aug. 14 event will take place on an outdoor plaza between the Westfield Century City mall and the Westfield Century City office building at 1801 Avenue of the Stars. JFS has also arranged for haircuts and vision tests to be available and will be providing clothing, shoes and healthy snacks.

JFS is currently seeking volunteers to distribute supplies on the day of the event as well as donations to purchase additional school supplies. Since last September, JFS Young Leaders, a committee of volunteers made up of young professionals in their 20s and 30s, have been working with Westfield to collect school supplies.

Volpert said that JFS decided to hold a public event this year to get “more things donated,” adding, “We could do more for people who need more.”
