Sitcoms are notorious for killing an actor's career -- exhibit No. 1: Ian Ziering of "Beverly Hills 90210." Jason Alexander's career is still going strong though, long after George was relegated to the realm of reruns. Alexander became the artistic director of Reprise! Broadway's Best company this year and for his first production, "Give My Regards to Broadway," he rounded up a few television legends to help him make a great first impression: Florence Henderson ("The Brady Bunch"), Shirley Jones ("The Partridge Family"), John Schneider ("The Dukes of Hazzard"), Dick Van Dyke ("The Dick Van Dyke Show") and others join Alexander, who will star as well as direct.

8 p.m. $150-$350. Brentwood Theatre, 11301 Wilshire Blvd., West Los Angeles. (310) 319-1111. http://www.reprise.org.

Sunday

Jonathan Feldman, one of the writers of the acclaimed HBO miniseries, "From the Earth to the Moon," and author of the screenplay for "Swing Kids," needs your help. He will be staging a reading of his new play, "HisStory," at Rubicon Theatre's "Plays-in-Progress" series, and your advice, commentary and criticism are not only welcome, they're integral to the revision process at the heart of this program. The play, about a filmmaker working on a docudrama about a man whose college roommate goes on to become the president of the United States, was first read on July 15 and received feedback from attendees. The revised work will be read tonight with an all-star cast including Noah Wylie, and you get to judge how effective the changes were.

7 p.m. Free (seats are reserved and tickets are required). Rubicon Theatre, 1006 E. Main St., Ventura Downtown Cultural District. (805) 667-2900. http://www.rubicontheatre.org.

Negron, who has Puerto Rican and Jewish ancestry, is not only a prolific actor and comedian, he's also a playwright. He'll be reading his newest creation, "Le Canard Gris" (Yoga Bitch), at NOTEwood tonight. The scathing commentary on the current yoga trend will feature actors from Theatre of Note.

Arnaldo Cohen
Music critics have lavished praise upon Brazilian pianist Arnaldo Cohen. They've called his performances "technically flawless," "thrilling," "magisterial" and "exultant." Cohen will be heating up the Bowl in "Sultry Spanish Nights," accompanied by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Brazilian chanteuse Luciana Souza. Lisbon native Joana Carneiro will lead the seductive repertoire of Spanish classics.

Robert K. Tanenbaum
Robert K. Tanenbaum has made a living out of crime -- investigating it, fighting it and writing about it. The trial lawyer who's never lost a felony case has also been the homicide bureau chief for the New York District Attorney's Office, assisted in the investigations of President Kennedy's and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassinations, taught at UC Berkeley and written over a dozen crime novels, as well as two true-crime books. Meet this bona fide crime sleuth in person and get his latest Butch Karp novel, "Malice," signed.

Damage Control
Every woman needs a good hairdresser ... and manicurist, and waxer, and nutritionist, and personal trainer ... where does our dependence on purveyors of beauty end? In "Damage Control," a plethora of wise and witty women share their most terrifying, heart-warming and riotous moments in the hands of these experts. Minnie Driver sings the praises of a Frenchman who understands her hair; Rose McGowan confesses that it takes a village to create a glamorous celeb out of an ordinary fem; and novelist-journalist and editor of the anthology, Emma Forrest, shares her tattooing tale and musings on being Jewish. Share anecdotes with Forrest and a few of the ladies tonight at the reading and book signing.

7 p.m. Free. Book Soup, 8818 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood. (310) 659-3110. http://www.booksoup.com.

Friday

Better Than Beethoven
Felix Mendelssohn was a 19th century rock star. The classical composer was good looking, charming and gifted. Overcoming anti-Semitism and a bitter rivalry with his contemporary, Richard Wagner, Mendelssohn rose to the status of a musical icon. A moving and humorous new show, "Better Than Beethoven," chronicles the composer's life -- his relationship with his Jewish philosopher grandfather, his father's attempts to shield the family from discrimination by converting them to Lutheranism, the hordes of adoring women who pursued him -- including Wagner's daughter -- and his revolutionizing effect on German classical music. But, the question remains for you to answer: Who's better than Beethoven?

Fri.-Sat. at 8 p.m., Sun. at 2 p.m. Through Aug. 12. $25. Secret Rose Theatre, 11246 Magnolia Blvd., North Hollywood. (323) 960-7863. http://www.plays411.com/btbmusical. July 20.
