The score for the local Jewish candidates in Tuesday’s election was one loss and one apparent win.

The apparent winner in the 5th council district for city councilman is veteran politician Paul Koretz, who held a 551-vote over David “Ty” Vahedi as of the latest count released Friday morning. Some ballots remain to be counted and County officials will release the next update on Tuesday.

In the race for city attorney, outgoing city councilman Jack Weiss lost to his dogged opponent, Carmen “Nuch” Trutanich by more than 11 points.

Running in the heavily Jewish 5th CD, Koretz strongly emphasized his roots in the Pico-Robertson area, his descent from a Holocaust survivor, and his efforts to save the Maimonides Academy in a neighborhood dispute.

If his victory holds, Jewish membership in the 15-person Los Angeles City Council will remain at two, with Koretz joining Councilwoman Jan Perry.

The Weiss-Trutanich face-off was a notably bitter one, with Trutanich gradually overcoming Weiss’ early lead, while Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s strong support for Weiss seemed to have little impact.

Weiss probably hurt his chances by not appearing at a number of major debates, notably one sponsored by the city’s homeowners associations at the Skirball Center.

However, Weiss conceded his defeat gracefully. The Times reported that in a concession phone call to Trutanich, Weiss “offered to help him in any way I can over the next four years to make sure he is a successful city attorney.”
