Classy Party for a Good Cause

Visions: The Next Generation, the newest division of Israel Cancer Research Fund's (ICRF) L.A. chapter, will hold its Jazz Night social mixer at the Skirball Cultural Center on June 6. If the evening is anything like last fall's Monte Carlo Night at the Park Plaza, Jazz Night will be another packed, swanky occasion where singles can meet.

Visions has been successful in attracting a lot of young professionals predominantly in their 20s and 30s into the ICRF fold via a variety of classy affairs. Orna Shifren, a local songstress of South African-Jewish upbringing, should give the proceedings some "Peter Gunn"-style ambiance. Dr. Harry Saperstein will offer some concise, practical advice for those seeking to decrease skin cancer risk. Michael Simon will chair the evening along with Alain Bonavida, Jeff Polak and Jill Gild.

"We're aware that a lot of European countries are not funding Israeli researchers," says Simon, 41. "There's a strong brain trust there, especially among the Russian immigrants, that need to be supported so that cures and/or treatment can be found."

Simon Shows Support for Israel Gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon

was the guest speaker at Congregation Bais Naftoli's 10th anniversary breakfast on Sunday, May 26. The California Republican candidate discussed his support for Israel, telling the crowd "I assert to you this morning that any democracy attacked by terrorism has a moral right to defend itself, and Israel is exercising that right."

The bulk of Simon's speech was devoted to decrying anti-Semitism and political intolerance in California. "When Jewish students rallying in support of Israel have to be placed under police protection, when they are subjected to the most vile slurs, that's not legitimate debate -- it's just hate, pure and simple," he said.

Approximately 350 men and 100 women attended the event at the orthodox synagogue, according to congregation president Andrew Friedman. County Supervisor Mike Antonovich, Sheriff Lee Baca and Israeli Consul Yehoshua Avigdor were among the other dignitaries in attendance at the event. -- Mike Levy, Staff Writer
