A northern California Jewish non-profit signed an agreement to purchase land for what it says is the largest urban Jewish farm in the United States.

Urban Adamah, an organic Jewish farm and educational organization, announced the purchase of the 2.2-acre parcel in a news release on Tuesday.

The Berkeley-based organization hopes to close on the $2.1 million property in September; Urban Adamah says it has raised $1.2 million.

“This land is a dream come true,” said Adam Berman, the founder and executive director of the group, which was founded in 2010. “It’s incredibly rare for such a large undeveloped tract to be available in this city — let alone one with access to a restored creek, forest habitat and playing fields. It is an incredible opportunity for us and for the whole community.”

Urban Adamah runs a farm and educational programs on a 1.25-acre parcel in West Berkeley. The new land will enable the non-profit to increase its agricultural production nearly five-fold and launch a residential fellowship program.
