Gay, Lesbian Rabbis Share Hurdles, Triumphs

When Denise Eger was in rabbinic school in the mid-1980s, she couldn’t talk about being a lesbian because that might have gotten her thrown out of the seminary.

When Jocee Hudson was at the same rabbinic school two decades later, she also didn’t talk much about being a lesbian — because it was such a nonissue. Everyone knew, and it was no big deal.

I've recently become close with Abe and Frank, two older guys in my neighborhood. At 90 and 88 respectively, they’re not the typical age of my other friends. At first I wasn’t sure if it was friendship. Maybe they were just humoring me or passing the time. Why would old people want to be friends with me, a 35-year-old?
